Generative AI on the rise: the most important web and mobile apps of the year

The rapid development in the field of generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) has revolutionized the way we use technology. These technologies now permeate numerous areas of life and have spawned a large number of consumer apps that are becoming increasingly popular. An insight into the latest developments is provided by the biannually updated list of the Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps published by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z). This list highlights the 50 most popular AI-based web products and the 50 leading AI-based mobile apps, ranked by monthly unique visits or active users.

New trends and up-and-coming categories

In the current edition of the ranking, there are remarkable developments that underline the dynamic nature of the AI market. It is particularly striking that almost 30 percent of companies are new to the ranking, which illustrates the rapid change and innovative strength of the industry. A dominant trend continues to be the use of creative tools. More than 52% of web products focus on content creation or editing, with the emphasis increasingly shifting from image generation to other media such as video and music.

Particularly interesting is the emergence of the new category “Aesthetics and Dating” with applications such as LooksMax, Umax and RIZZ, which are attracting widespread interest and show new potential for the use of Gen AI.

Cross-platform trends and top performers

Some apps have particularly stood out in recent months. Perplexity, an AI-based search engine, reached 3rd place among web products, while Claude from Anthropic moved up to 4th place. The music generator Suno made a remarkable leap from 36th to 5th place, which illustrates the growing interest in AI-generated music content.

In the web sector, content generation remains the dominant area. Web apps that were originally only known for image editing have expanded their portfolio to include video and music editing. One example of this is Midjourney, which has maintained its top position in Discord invitations, demonstrating the importance of social platforms as early indicators of the success of new AI apps.

In the mobile sector, tools for editing content, particularly images and videos, continue to enjoy great popularity. Established tools such as Meitu, SNOW and Adobe Express have evolved into AI-based solutions and maintain their position in the top 100.

Creativity and productivity as success factors

The analysis of the leading apps shows that creative tools and productivity-enhancing applications currently dominate the market. More than 52 percent of the leading web apps focus on content creation or editing, and this trend is also continuing in mobile apps. Of particular note is the growing influence of AI assistants and chatbots. While ChatGPT remains the most commonly used AI tool, alternatives such as Perplexity and Claude are gaining traction.

In the productivity category, seven companies are represented in the ranking, including Liner, Eightify, Phind and MaxAI. These tools specialize in making tasks such as summaries, transcriptions and more efficient work easier.

A changing market

The latest list of the Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps from a16z provides an exciting insight into the ongoing development of the generative AI market. Creative and productivity-enhancing applications dominate the market, while new niches such as aesthetics and dating are gaining traction. The ever-changing landscape shows that Gen AI is not just a passing trend, but an area with huge potential for innovation and growth. This promises to continue to permanently change the way we use technology.
