At a time when TikTok is being torn between political fronts, an unexpected saviour suddenly appears on the horizon: Perplexity AI. The up-and-coming AI company recently unveiled an ambitious plan to take over TikTok in the US and fundamentally transform it. But what’s behind this surprising merger? Can a search engine really be the future of one of the world’s most popular social media platforms?
The vision: a transparent TikTok ‘Made in America’
Perplexity AI, founded in 2022 by a group of AI researchers, has quickly become one of the most exciting companies in the field of artificial intelligence. With a valuation of now 9 billion dollars and prominent investors such as Jeff Bezos and Nvidia behind it, the company has big plans for TikTok.
The core of their vision: TikTok is to be completely rebuilt – with American infrastructure and transparent algorithms. ‘We are in a unique position to redesign the TikTok algorithm without creating a monopoly,’ explains Perplexity in its blog post. The company combines technical expertise with the independence of a ‘little tech’ player – in contrast to the big tech giants.
The entire infrastructure is developed and operated in American data centres, under American supervision and in accordance with US data protection standards. The famous ‘For You’ feed, the centrepiece of TikTok, would be developed from scratch – and published as an open source project.
Technological revolution: How Perplexity wants to change TikTok
Perplexity’s technical ambitions go far beyond transparency. The company plans to power TikTok’s AI infrastructure with Nvidia Dynamo – an advanced technology unveiled at the Nvidia GPU Technology Conference 2025. This could scale TikTok’s recommendation models by a factor of 100, while at the same time increasing processing speed.
Another centrepiece of the technological redesign is the integration of Perplexity’s citation system. All answers on Perplexity contain citations – a basic principle that is now to be transferred to TikTok videos. Users will be able to check information in real time while watching videos.
In addition, Perplexity plans to develop a powerful context system that uses community feedback and AI capabilities to highlight reliable information – similar to their @AskPerplexity account on X, which already has over 130,000 followers.
The search for truth: Perplexity’s answer to disinformation
At a time when misinformation and ‘fake news’ are omnipresent, Perplexity is taking a radical approach: transparency and verifiability. The integration of their response engine into TikTok would allow users to instantly verify information and dive deeper into topics.
‘We promise to make TikTok the most neutral and trustworthy platform in the world,’ explains Perplexity. An ambitious goal in a landscape where social media is often criticised for its role in spreading misinformation.
The combination of Perplexity’s response engine with TikTok’s extensive video library could indeed create one of the best search experiences in the world.
Creativity meets knowledge: New opportunities for users and creators
For the millions of TikTok users and content creators, the acquisition by Perplexity could open up exciting new opportunities. Perplexity’s AI orchestration could enrich videos with contextual information and even offer multilingual features. Through automatic translation and annotation, creators could extend their reach to global audiences.
For users who link their Perplexity and TikTok accounts, cross-platform signals could improve personalisation. Understanding perplexity for user interests could deliver more relevant content on TikTok, while content preferences on TikTok would enable more personalised responses to perplexity.
The political context: TikTok between the fronts
To understand the significance of Perplexity’s takeover bid, we need to look at the political context. TikTok is under enormous pressure in the US. The US government has given ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, an ultimatum: Either they sell the US division of the app to an American company or TikTok will be banned in the US.
This is due to concerns about national security and data protection. The US government fears that the Chinese government could gain access to user data via TikTok or exert political influence.
In this tense environment, Perplexity is positioning itself as a neutral mediator. As a relatively young company without the market power of a tech giant like Meta or Google, Perplexity could be an attractive alternative – both for the US government and for ByteDance.
However, the question remains: Is Perplexity, with a valuation of 9 billion dollars, even in a position to take over TikTok, whose US business is estimated at 30 to 50 billion dollars?
Opportunities and risks: a critical view
As promising as Perplexity’s vision sounds, there are legitimate questions and potential challenges. Firstly, the financial feasibility is questionable. Perplexity would have to secure considerable additional investment in order to make a purchase.
The technical implementation is also ambitious. Developing the algorithm of a platform with hundreds of millions of users from scratch is no small feat – even for a team of AI experts. There is a risk of service interruptions, user dissatisfaction and technical difficulties during the transition phase.
The cultural dimension should not be underestimated either. TikTok is not just a technology platform, but a cultural phenomenon with its own trends, stars and communities. Too much change could be met with resistance.
A bold step into uncharted territory
Perplexity’s vision for TikTok is undoubtedly ambitious – perhaps even revolutionary. It promises a platform that is not only entertaining, but also informative, transparent and trustworthy. A platform that combines the strengths of social media and search engines while setting new standards for transparency and user empowerment.
Whether this vision becomes reality depends on many factors – financial, technical, political and cultural. But regardless of the outcome of the takeover bid, Perplexity has already made an important contribution to the discussion about the future of social media.
