Runway GEN:48 – Review of the third issue

The third edition of the Runway GEN:48 competition took place, in which teams have to create a film entirely in Runway within 48 hours. With the introduction of Gen3 technology, the visual level of this edition reached new heights, giving the films an impressive technical and aesthetic quality. As in previous competitions, extraordinary stories were told that impressively demonstrate the creativity and technical skills of the participating filmmakers.

The winners

A number of films stood out in the competition and impressed both the jury and the audience. These are the winners:

Grand Prix: “Beatrice” by OLD NEW RARE

People’s Choice Winner: “RUPU-KK: the Loop” by Federico Papasodero, Emidio Battipaglia and Simone Adami

Jury Selection: “So Much for a Piece of Blue Sky” by UNVEIL

Jury Selection: “Shizukana Koe” by John Kelly

Best Craft: “Honu” by Holden Boyles

Best Script: “Welcome to Void’s” by Neural Viz

IMAX Selection: “the brace little len (or how a fox became a father)” by Thomas Fenk and Clifny Alves de Lima

Gen3

The use of Gen3 raised the bar significantly for this year’s competition. The new technology enabled teams to create their films with even more realistic and detailed visualisations. The advances in the representation of light, shadow and animation were particularly striking, giving the films an almost professional quality. Runway continues to grow in capability, and the competition shows just how far the combination of creativity and advanced AI technology can go.

Runway GEN:48 has proven once again that it is not only an exciting competition for filmmakers, but also a platform for exploring the possibilities of artificial intelligence in the creative field. The participants impressed with their ability to develop and implement complex stories in a very short time – a challenge that required creativity, teamwork and technical skill in equal measure. The competition thus remains an exciting example of the future of storytelling.
