You explain the traffic rules, equip them with a helmet and reflectors, and give a little speech about safety. Now replace the bike with an AI that your child uses every day – be it as a chatbot friend, learning aid, or simple toy. What is missing here? Rules, protective mechanisms, and maybe a helmet – but this time for the digital world.

The question of whether state regulation of AI is needed is particularly controversial when it comes to children and young people. Just like riding a bike in traffic, using AI involves risks that we as a society cannot afford to ignore.

AI and children: an invisible proliferation

Children today are growing up with AI, often without their parents or teachers really noticing. Voice assistants like Alexa answer homework questions, chatbots help with heartache, and personalized learning apps optimize vocabulary learning. Sounds harmless, doesn’t it? But as with driving, there are potentially dangerous curves.

The New York Times article provides a disturbing example. It describes how a teenager fell into an emotional downward spiral under the influence of an AI chatbot – with a tragic end. Such cases may be isolated, but they raise urgent questions: Who is responsible? And above all, what safeguards are there for the most vulnerable users?

Rules like for alcohol or driving?

There are clear legal barriers for many areas of life. We don’t let twelve-year-olds drive cars and we only sell alcohol to adults. Why? Because we recognize that some risks require a certain level of maturity.

The use of AI may seem less dangerous at first glance – after all, there is no direct danger to life as there is when driving a car. However, subliminal dangers such as manipulation, dependency and the influence on mental health should not be underestimated.

One possible solution could be a “digital driving licence”. Children and young people could be introduced to the use of AI step by step, while providers would be obliged to incorporate protective mechanisms such as content filters and transparency protocols. Such regulations could be similar to youth protection laws for media, but for the digital world.

State regulation: a necessary step or overregulation?

This is where it gets tricky: where do you draw the line between protection and surveillance? The article by the Marketing AI Institute shows that many AI providers are consciously seeking to incorporate security features. However, voluntary self-commitments are often not enough – especially when economic interests prevail.

A comparison with road traffic is instructive here. We didn’t introduce traffic rules because we wanted to annoy drivers, but because they save lives. Similarly, government AI regulations could protect children from the harmful effects of immature systems without stifling innovation.

Solutions: Who applies the handbrake?

Education is key: children need to learn not only how to use AI but also to understand its limitations. Digital education should be as much a part of school as physical education.

Technical safeguards: AI systems that are accessible to children could have clear age restrictions, transparency about data processing and ethical design principles.

Government controls: Governments could set standards – similar to those for toys – and establish independent testing centers for AI systems.

Conclusion: the digital guard rail

Whether we like it or not, AI is here to stay. The question is not whether we regulate it, but how. As with driving or alcohol, the key is to strike a balance between freedom and responsibility. Parents, teachers and policymakers have a shared duty to give young people the chance to benefit from AI without being stranded in its dangers.

The prudent use of AI is not a given – it requires rules, education and social discussion. Because, as with riding a bike, the right equipment and clear guard rails make the path safer.

Sources:

https://www.marketingaiinstitute.com/

https://www.nytimes.com/

A discussion about protection, rules, and responsibility

Imagine buying your child a new bicycle.
