Artificial intelligence (AI) has long since become part of our everyday lives. Whether in online shopping, social networks or self-driving cars – what sounded like science fiction just a few decades ago is now reality. But while many are celebrating the progress of AI, there are also voices of concern. One of the most important comes from Geoffrey Hinton, a British computer scientist known as the ‘Godfather of AI’.
The long road to AI
Hinton, a key figure in the development of AI, was instrumental in advancing the concept of artificial neural networks. These networks form the backbone of modern AI systems, which are used in countless applications today. However, Hinton himself has mixed feelings about the development he helped to shape.
In an interview, Hinton talks about his career, which began in the 1970s at the University of Edinburgh. At the time, he was trying to simulate the human brain in a computer – an idea that many of his colleagues thought was crazy. But Hinton refused to be deterred and pursued his vision for decades until it finally became a reality. In 2019, he was honoured with the Turing Award, the ‘Nobel Prize in Computer Science’, for his work.
Gloomy vision of the future
Despite his achievements and the enormous possibilities offered by AI, Hinton expresses serious concerns today. He warns that AI systems could soon be more intelligent than humans and thus gain uncontrollable power. These systems are already capable of learning, making decisions and even writing their own programmes. Their manipulability is particularly worrying – they could become so persuasive that they can no longer simply be switched off.
These warnings are reminiscent of historical figures such as Robert Oppenheimer, the inventor of the atomic bomb, who later fought against the development of the even more destructive hydrogen bomb. Hinton sees parallels and calls for now to be the right time for strict regulations and international treaties. Especially in the military sector, AI systems should be strictly controlled in order to prevent catastrophic consequences.
A turning point for humanity
Hinton emphasises that the future of humanity could be at stake if we do not take the risks of AI seriously. We are at a turning point where we need to decide how we deal with this powerful technology. While AI has the potential to improve our lives, it could also become the biggest threat to our existence – if we are not careful.
There is a lot of uncertainty about what the future of AI will bring. But one thing is clear: we need to act now to ensure that this technology is used in our favour. Geoffrey Hinton, the man who helped develop AI, strongly advises us to think carefully before it’s too late.
